Cinnamon comes in two main types: Cassia cinnamon and Ceylon cinnamon. Cassia cinnamon, commonly used in many foods, contains high amounts of coumarin (on average around 3000mg/kg), which can cause liver damage in sensitive individuals. Therefore, Cassia cinnamon should be consumed in moderation. The tolerable daily intake is 0.1mg of coumarin per kilogram of body weight, which for a 15kg toddler can already be reached with 30g of cinnamon stars or 100g of gingerbread. Ceylon cinnamon contains significantly less coumarin (less than 8mg/kg) and is therefore the safer choice for regular consumption.
In addition to these precautions, cinnamon also has positive effects. It stimulates digestion and can help prevent a feeling of fullness. Animal studies suggest that the compounds in cinnamon bark, particularly polyphenols, can change the gut microbiome over the long term and may reduce obesity and diabetes. Nevertheless, it is advisable to discuss this with your treating diabetologist. (BARMER, 2025; Food Safety, 2024)
